The Nest Doorbell wired (second-gen) is the successor to the excellent Nest Hello, which has long been one of my favorite video doorbells. Like its predecessor, the $179.99 Nest Doorbell wired is one of the smartest buzzers you can buy. With Nest’s Familiar Faces feature, it can tell you not only when someone is at your door but who. It can also spot when a package arrives and when it’s removed.

The replacement for the excellent Hello doorbell is almost an exact replica of the battery-powered Nest Doorbell, only with wires and 24/7 recording. This can make for a very noisy few seconds if you have multiple Nest speakers in your home unless you set some to Do Not Disturb mode. The problems only occurred when the doorbell was on 2.4GHz; when it was on 5GHz, everything was smooth and flawless. I am running an Eero Pro 6E mesh Wi-Fi network with the main router just 10 feet from the front door. By rebooting the doorbell, I could get it on the 5GHz channel, but after a day or two, it would fall back to 2.4GHz.

Sometimes it took up to 10 seconds, and others, it timed out completely. I also had multiple times when I couldn’t retrieve a recorded event, the app saying, “This video isn’t available yet. Check back later.” On the plus side, checking back later did often result in the video appearing. While that might be helpful if you were tracking down a package thief, it’s not great if you wanted to talk to the person while they were at your door.
Before you factory reset
I never once got a false positive alert from the Nest — its on-device AI is very good. These smart alerts help cut down on notification noise. Earlier Nest cameras would send me notifications all night when a spider was weaving its web over the lens, but Google has refined this on its newest models. During setup, the app lets you connect your doorbell to Wi-Fi, personalize settings, check the video quality, and more. You should also take note that all of the nest doorbell chimes below are all standard size, meaning that the physical internal parts are standardized.
You can use as many Ring Chimes as you’d like, dotted around your home so that you’ll always hear the doorbell go even if you’re at the back of your house or upstairs. Your camera’s personalized settings will revert to default settings. Disconnect your doorbell from power by unplugging the power adaptor from the electrical socket.

That’s a good question, I hadn’t thought to address that. But unfortunately the answer is no – the Ring Base Station doesn’t integrate much with Ring Doorbells or Cameras (apart from being able to setup the Ring Floodlight/Spotlight Cam’s sirens). Hey Holly, I’m not sure that you can connect them unfortunately . Google Nest doesn’t have great support of rival products. The Nest Hello works fine, but Ring Doorbell support isn’t as good. The latest Chime Pro model also has a night-light, which you might not think too much about, but it’s really handy if you’re going downstairs at night.
This is particularly important when you consider that there’s no Nest chime, meaning you’ll be limited purely to phone notifications unless you buy a Google compatible speaker. As we’ve mentioned already, the doorbell can be connected to the mains power. However, it’s worth noting, this provides a trickle charge to the battery. Depending on how the doorbell is being used, the battery may drain faster than the hard-wire can charge it, so you may still need to use the USB-C cable to recharge it yourself. This Eufy video lock comes bundled with a wireless door chime that also doubles as a local storage hub so you don't have to worry about those pesky subscriptions. That's not to say Eufy doesn't have a cloud service if you want it; you just aren't forced to pay more.
The screenshot on the left is from the Nest wired; the one on the right is from the Ring Pro 2. The Ring image processing has more brightness making the face clearer. The Google branding is subtle, and the doorbell button is nice and large.
The wired version of the Nest Doorbell may need more work to set up, but you never have to worry about recharging the battery. Plus, wired doorbells can use the chime you already have installed. The battery version, meanwhile, allows you to place the doorbell wherever it’s most convenient and gets the best views for the video camera, while also allowing you to customize the new chime.
As it happens, my Deta C3501 is not compatible with a Ring Doorbell Pro so when I installed my Pro, I had to strip the unit back completely. To remove it from the app, open the app, then tap Settings Remove device Confirm. Use the release tool to hold down the button on the back of your doorbell for about 10 seconds. Insert the release tool into the hole at the bottom of your doorbell to remove it from its base. The only real reason you’d need to fork out extra for a Nest Aware subscription is if you want facial recognition smarts or longer storage options. However, this doorbell doesn’t offer the 10 days of 24/7 continuous video history that Nest Doorbell users can get on the most expensive Nest Aware plan, even if it’s undergone a wired installation. For no fees and totally local recording, Eufy Wired is a good, inexpensive option. If you want smart alerts, Eufy has said the Eufy Wired will work with its AI-powered HomeBase 3 . This will add facial recognition, pet, and vehicle alerts to the camera.
If you already have an existing mechanical doorbell chime it’s worth trying to connect it to the nest hello there’s a good chance that it will work. If you want to hear your existing wired doorbell chime when someone presses your battery-powered doorbell, you have the option to connect your existing doorbell wires (8 to 24VAC, 10VA, 50/60Hz transformer). If your smart doorbell camera takes a long time to send a push notification after someone rings your doorbell, then you risk missing your visitor completely. If you have latency problems, start with your Wi-Fi connection. If it isn't strong where the doorbell is installed, you might consider moving it (or, more easily, getting a Wi-Fi range extender). For security purposes, your video doorbell videos are only stored with your account, which means once you've deleted a video, even accidentally, it's gone.
